Weather

You know weather - it can be both friend and foe. Calm winds and seas make for enjoyable power boating, waterskiing, and fishing. A fresh breeze and a light chop provide an invigorating sailing or wind surfing experience. But the sudden emergence of dark clouds, shifting and gusty winds, torrential downpours and lightning can turn a day’s pleasure into a nightmare of distress. Here are some tips on how to keep your pleasure and safety to a maximum.

Before Setting Out

Be prepared by determining what the weather conditions will be for the entire duration of your time on the water. If your going to venture to Block Island, Long Island, Shelter Island, Newport or go deep-sea fishing, determine what the weather conditions will be in the areas you will be visiting.

  • Watch the weather on TV (local weather or The Weather Channel)

  • Visit the NOAA website

  • Listen to the weather channel on your VHF radio

  • If the weather calls for Small Craft Advisories or storm warnings, you should use caution. If at all possible, do not go!

While On The Water

Use your on-board radar system, VHF radio and/or your eyes to make sure your boating adventure will be safe. Weather conditions can change, so use all of the tools available to you to ensure a fun day.

If you experience a change in the winds, higher/stronger winds, rain clouds, thunder/lightening, get back to land as soon as you can.

You can view more detailed weather information at the U.S. Coast Guard website.
